Year-round production of top quality
Our Ziway nursery is located in beautiful surroundings on the shores of Lake Ziway in the Rift Valley. At an altitude of 1650 metres, a wide range of intermediate and large-flowered roses are produced here.
The climate in Ziway is well suited to growing a reliable top-quality product all year round. The roses are grown in foil greenhouses without heating or assimilation light.
Grown in harmony with the environment
Our nursery in Ziway is located next to Lake Ziway, one of the Rift-Valley lakes. This means we have to take responsibility for preventing pollution of the lake:
Plant protection is necessary to protect roses from diseases and pests. Years of research and testing have already allowed us to replace 75% of chemical agents with biological methods. For example, we use natural enemies, beneficial fungi and natural plant extracts to control pests and diseases.
All water waste streams are collected and filtered in our own wetland system. After filtering, the water is again suitable for use in cultivation.
All green waste residues are composted internally and used in our own greenhouses to improve soil structure. We also use natural agents to strengthen soil life. A healthy resilient soil also ensures a resilient crop on top.
Grown with love for people
Doing business in a third-world country is, in our opinion, impossible without taking our social responsibility. Only with happy and healthy employees can we grow beautiful flowers treated with love and care.
We offer our employees a permanent contract with a good salary, surrounded by all kinds of extra conditions. For instance, we offer our employees free healthcare, including at our own clinic. We pay school fees for our employees' children. In addition, our employees are given every opportunity to develop themselves through courses and evening studies.
AQ Roses Ziway is Fairtrade certified. This means that over every rose sold as Fairtrade, an amount is made available to our Fairtrade Premium Committee for a variety of projects.
